6 River Terrace, Battery Park City
An all-female ensemble from the KCO celebrates Women’s History Month with a performance showcasing great classical and contemporary female composers. Led by KCO concertmaster Belinda Whitney and featured KCO violinist Joyce Hamman, the ensemble will play works by women composers, such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, Florence Price (the first African-American woman to have a composition played by a major orchestra), and exciting contemporary composers like Jessie Montgomery and Mercedes Zavalas.
The KCO musicians will also share their stories – how they followed their musical dreams, thrilling performances they’re proud of, maybe even some back-stage details about famous collaborators. Ms. Whitney, for example, has been the concertmaster for numerous Broadway shows; currently, she serves as concertmaster for My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center. A minority woman, she has worked on film scores, records, and with artists as diverse as Michael Jackson, Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, and Stevie Wonder. Please see this International Musician magazine cover story about Ms. Whitney. Joyce Hamman is the concertmaster of the longest running show on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera. Ms. Hamman has performed with Paul McCartney, Sting and Bruce Springsteen.
